FG, UN, ECOWAS donate to refugees/IDPs in Nasarawa

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons IDPs (NCFRMI), the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have donated food and other relief materials to a refugee camp in Nyanya Gwandara, Nasarawa State.
According to DAILY TRUST, the donations were part of activities marking the 2017 World Refugees Day themed “We Stand Together #With Refugees/IDPs”.
The Federal Commissioner of the NCFRMI Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouk said that the commission has on every June 20th lead actions in line with the United Nations (UN) aspirations to celebrate the World Refugee Day in Nigeria.
“I am delighted to take part in this distribution of food items as part of line up activities to mark the Day and to express our solidarity with refugees and IDPs in Nigeria. As we gather to pay tribute to the courageous, unwavering hope of the world’s refugees and the IDPs, let us all take a moment to remember those affected, assure them that they are not forgotten,” she said.
The Country Representative of the UNHCR Mr Antonio Canhandula said the day was to show solidarity with the refugees and IDPs who not on their own accounts found themselves in their present situations.
“Nigeria have refugees and IDPs in Cameroun and other places. This is why we appreciate the Nigerian Government through the NCFRMI and we are hopeful the refugees would one day return to their homes,” Canhandula said.
Also the Commissioner Social Affairs and Gender at the ECOWAS Secretariat Dr Fatima Dia Sow represented by Alozie Amaechi Godfrey said there were many prominent people who were once refugees and IDPs and that the societal and governmental aides contributed immensely in their overcoming their challenges and rose to stardom.DAILY TRUST
