FG to Review MTN Group’s Acquisition of IHS Towers
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has said it is closely monitoring developments in the telecommunications sector following the acquisition of IHS Towers by MTN Group
In a statement issued on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, noted that the move comes amid ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and enhancing investor confidence in the telecoms industry.
The ministry highlighted that under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the administration has implemented deliberate measures over the past two years to stabilise and reposition the telecommunications sector as a cornerstone of the nation’s digital economy.
These efforts, it said, include policy clarity, regulatory backing, and sustained engagement with industry players to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.
According to the statement, recent financial reports from major operators reflect improved profitability, renewed infrastructure investments, and greater operational stability across the industry.
The government described these developments as signs of resilience and evidence that ongoing reforms are yielding positive outcomes.
Given the strategic role of telecommunications infrastructure in national security, financial services, economic growth, innovation, and social inclusion, the ministry said it would carry out a comprehensive assessment of the acquisition in collaboration with relevant regulatory authorities.
The review, it explained, is intended to ensure that any consolidation or structural adjustments within the sector align with national development goals and protect consumer interests, investments, and overall market sustainability.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining a stable, transparent, and forward-looking policy environment to keep Nigeria’s telecommunications industry on a strong growth trajectory, in line with its broader vision of building a robust digital economy.
