FG promises improved health care services- inaugurate new board

As a means towards improving the service delivery in the health sector and controlling exercises amongst professionals, the ministry of health has inaugurated governing board to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.

The permanent secretary of the ministry of health   Abdullahi  Mashi said despite significant improvement in the health sector more can be achieved “Over the years, the Federal Ministry of Health has witnessed some laudable achievements in its oversight functions. However, there remains a lot to be done to truly position the health sector to its desired status, considering the enormous and worrisome issues being faced in the health sector.

Some of these issues are inter- and intra-professional rivalries, headship in the health sector, professional and administrative misconducts, funding of institutions, legal issues pending in the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), indiscipline, lack of capacity and many others; which have caused unrest in the health sector, sometimes leading to industrial actions”.

The permanent secretary disclosed this while inaugurating  the new governing board in Abuja.

He added that “The  inauguration of these Governing Boards is a further move by the Federal Government towards strengthening the health sector in line with the focus and direction of this administration, which is transparency, accountability and fiscal responsibility.

Meanwhile the director hospital services Dr Joseph Amedu  also said the federal ministry of health remains concern at the constant dissatisfaction expressed by the public the nonchalant attitude displayed by a majority of health workers in the discharge of their duties “ many study and reports assert that we have excellent policies and guidelines but the management of the implementation process is faulty ,improve quality of service delivery has been a priority of the ministry of health and it has made significant efforts to define standard compliance through its annual oversight functions which will assist in steaming the tide of medical tourism and lead to the achievement and universal health converge.

Dr Amedu also urged members of the board to devise innovative ways of ensuring that health care professionals across the divide collaborate with each other in the spirit of professional interdependence and comply with prescribed codes of practice of professional conduct while maintaining the highest ethical decorum in and out of the work place.
