FG plans new emergency passport to replace STEC by 2026
The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a new emergency travel document, the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP), by 2026.
According to the government, the STEP is expected to replace the current Single Travel Emergency Certificate (STEC), which is issued to Nigerians facing urgent travel situations, particularly those stranded abroad without valid travel documents.
Officials say the proposed emergency passport is designed to improve security, reduce processing time, and align Nigeria’s emergency travel documentation with international best practices. The STEP will also feature enhanced biometric and verification components, making it more acceptable to foreign immigration authorities and airlines.
The government noted that the initiative forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at modernising passport administration and strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s travel documents.
Further details on eligibility, application procedures, and rollout timelines are expected to be released as preparations advance ahead of the planned 2026 implementation.
