FG orders emergency evacuation of Nigerians from Israel and Iran amid rising tensions

The Federal Government has initiated emergency evacuation plans for Nigerian citizens in Israel and Iran following the rapid escalation of hostilities between the two countries.

This directive comes in the wake of a major airstrike campaign launched by Israel on Friday, targeting over 100 strategic sites in Iran, including military and nuclear facilities.

The strikes reportedly resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian military officials and provoked swift retaliatory attacks by Iran, leading to multiple civilian and military casualties on both sides.

In response to the worsening security situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced late Tuesday that arrangements are underway to evacuate Nigerians stranded in both nations.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that following the escalation of the crisis between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” said ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.

Nigerian nationals in Israel and Iran have been advised to comply with local security guidelines and immediately contact the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Mission for assistance.

“All affected Nigerian citizens are therefore strongly advised to abide by necessary security protocols and contact the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Mission for registration and further instructions,” the statement added.

The Federal Government also praised the swift response of Nigerian missions in Tel Aviv and Tehran for their proactive engagement with Nigerian communities in the affected regions.

“The Ministry commends the efforts put in place by our Missions in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Tehran, Iran, for their dedication and commitment to reaching out to the Nigerian Community in these difficult times.”

Reaffirming its commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians at home and abroad, the government assured the public that it is coordinating with international partners and local authorities to ensure a timely and secure evacuation.

Additionally, Nigeria renewed its call for an immediate end to hostilities and urged all parties to prioritise diplomacy and the protection of civilians.

“The Government of Nigeria reiterates its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law, and prioritise the protection of civilians.

“Nigeria stands firm in support of peaceful conflict resolution and reaffirms its longstanding commitment to regional and global peace and stability,” the statement concluded.
