FG denies plan to target opposition
…Labels Alleged “ADP4VIP” Programme Fake
The Federal Government has dismissed as false and misleading a document circulating online alleging a plot to arrest, detain and prosecute opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the document—which claims the existence of a secret multi-agency task force tagged “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons)—is entirely fabricated.
According to the minister, the document falsely alleges that agencies including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), under the coordination of the Office of the National Security Adviser, were planning to target prominent opposition figures, particularly within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), without due process.
“The Federal Government categorically states that it harbours no plans to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute opposition figures,” Idris said, stressing that no such programme as “ADP4VIP” exists.
He described the claims as deliberate disinformation aimed at portraying lawful accountability as political persecution and shielding influential individuals from answering to the law. Idris added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains focused on its core priorities, including economic reforms, tackling insecurity, expanding trade opportunities and restoring investor confidence.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to democratic principles, the minister noted that Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees Nigerians the right to freedom of association and assembly, protections which President Tinubu has sworn to uphold.
“Nigeria is a constitutional democracy where law enforcement and judicial agencies are obligated to perform their duties professionally, without interference, and in the nation’s best interest,” he said, adding that the administration remains committed to the rule of law, due process and the independence of institutions.
The Federal Government also cautioned politicians and citizens against engaging in misinformation and fake news, warning that the approach of the 2027 elections may see a rise in fabricated narratives and political blackmail.
As the year draws to a close, Idris said the Tinubu administration would not be distracted by what he described as “perpetual politicking,” insisting that the government remains dedicated to delivering continuity, progress and tangible results for Nigerians.
