FG, Borno state reasses security strategy amid rising terrorist attacks
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced a joint initiative with the Federal Government to review and strengthen security strategies in response to a recent surge in terrorist attacks across parts of the state.
In a statewide broadcast on Saturday, Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bolstering local security frameworks, improving intelligence gathering, and ensuring frontline security personnel are adequately equipped.
“In recent months, I have held extensive consultations with federal authorities and the leadership of various security agencies,” Zulum said. “I’m pleased to report that our collaboration with the Federal Government is stronger than ever. Together, we are working on comprehensive strategies to enhance intelligence sharing and provide our security forces with the tools they need to counter emerging threats.”
The governor noted that President Bola Tinubu and the country’s Service Chiefs have assured their full support in helping Borno tackle its persistent security challenges.
Zulum also emphasized plans to reinforce local volunteer security groups such as the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), vigilantes, and community hunters, while boosting community-based intelligence networks and early warning systems.
He issued a strong warning to individuals and communities against collaborating with insurgents, labeling such actions as betrayal. “These armed groups are our common enemies. Collaborating with them, in any form, only undermines our collective safety,” he said.
Addressing other challenges, Zulum spoke about the ongoing water scarcity in Maiduguri and nearby areas, which he attributed to infrastructure damage caused by last year’s devastating flood. He appealed for public patience as efforts continue to restore the water supply system.
In response to growing criminal activity in Maiduguri metropolis, the governor announced the reconstitution of the Anti-Social Vices Committee to tackle violent crimes and maintain public order.
He called on citizens, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to unite in support of peacebuilding efforts, acknowledging that lasting peace requires collective resolve.
“We know the path to enduring peace is difficult. But with unity, perseverance, and faith, we shall overcome, insha Allah,” he assured.
In a spiritual appeal, Zulum urged all residents of Borno State to observe a voluntary fast on Monday, May 19, seeking divine intervention for peace and stability. “Fasting is not just a personal spiritual act; it is a collective expression of hope. Through prayer and reflection, we can renew our strength and solidarity,” he said.
The governor also extended condolences to the families of military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, praying for their comfort amid the irreplaceable loss.
