Enugu unveils armed, tech-driven forest guard unit to bolster security

The Enugu State Government has launched a modernised Forest Guard Unit equipped with advanced weaponry, surveillance tools, and mobility assets as part of a renewed push to strengthen security across rural communities and vulnerable border areas.

The new unit, unveiled on Friday, comes with a significant investment in cutting-edge technology and logistics funded by the Enugu State Security Trust Fund. The deployments include two high-tech surveillance drones, 10 Hilux patrol vehicles, 40 motorcycles for rapid forest mobility, and 400 bulletproof helmets and vests.

Officials say the retooled Forest Guards will focus on combating rising incidences of kidnapping, illegal mining, armed herder incursions, and other criminal activities occurring within the state’s forest belts.

Speaking during the launch, state authorities described the initiative as a strategic step to enhance intelligence gathering, improve response time, and reclaim forested territories that have become difficult to police using conventional methods.

Security experts present at the event commended the state’s investment in technology-driven security architecture, noting that the combination of drones, mobility assets, and protective gear positions Enugu as one of the leading states in sub-national security innovation.

The Forest Guard Unit, first reactivated under previous administrations, is now undergoing expanded training to operate the upgraded equipment and coordinate intelligence with other security agencies.

Residents and community leaders have expressed optimism that the enhanced unit will help deter criminality and restore confidence in affected rural areas.
