Emir of Kano Calls for Stricter Penalties for Wife Abuse

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has advocated for harsher punishments for men who abuse their wives, emphasizing that true Muslims do not resort to physical violence against their spouses.

He expressed concern over the rising cases of gender-based violence, including domestic abuse and rape, in Kano State.

Sanusi stressed the importance of Islamic leaders in promoting peaceful conflict resolution and condemning violence in marital relationships.

He urged Imams and clerics to use their platforms to guide families and reshape societal norms.

The Emir commended organizations working to tackle gender-based violence and encouraged collaborative efforts to safeguard women’s dignity.

He made these remarks while receiving representatives from the Development Research and Project Center and the Center for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue at his palace.
