Elumelu Celebrates Birthday by Expanding Support for 3,200 African Entrepreneurs
Nigerian business leader and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has marked his birthday with a renewed push to empower young entrepreneurs across Africa, announcing 3,200 beneficiaries for the 2026 Entrepreneurship Programme of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF).
The announcement, made in Abuja, forms part of Elumelu’s annual reflection on impact and purpose, reinforcing his commitment to driving economic transformation through entrepreneurship.

In his yearly message, Elumelu stressed that prosperity on the continent can be deliberately built and expanded, noting that hope must go beyond sentiment to become a structured system. His remarks reflect his long-standing advocacy of Africapitalism, a philosophy that promotes private sector-led development in Africa.
The selected entrepreneurs, drawn from all 54 African countries, will each receive $5,000 in seed funding, alongside access to mentorship, business training, and the Foundation’s digital platform, TEFConnect.

Elumelu highlighted the programme’s growing footprint, revealing that the Foundation has disbursed over $100 million to more than 24,000 entrepreneurs since inception. He added that about 80 per cent of supported businesses have scaled beyond the startup phase, outperforming global benchmarks.
According to him, beneficiaries of the programme have collectively generated over $4.2 billion in revenue, created 1.5 million jobs, and lifted more than 2.1 million Africans out of poverty, with impact reaching over four million households.
This year’s cohort also reflects increasing female participation, with women making up 51 per cent of beneficiaries. Elumelu noted that this outcome underscores merit-based selection and the rising influence of women in Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape.
Reflecting on the Foundation’s journey since its establishment in 2010, Elumelu reiterated its mission to democratise opportunity by investing in Africa’s people. He also acknowledged the contributions of partners and stakeholders supporting the vision of building a self-sustaining continent.
The Tony Elumelu Foundation remains one of Africa’s foremost philanthropic organisations focused on entrepreneurship, providing funding, mentorship, and networks aimed at reshaping the continent’s development through investment-driven growth.
