El-Rufai: Opposition May Register New Party to Counter APC Infiltration of ADC

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that the coalition of opposition parties currently operating under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may float a new political party as a contingency plan ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview with Radio France International (RFI) Hausa service on Wednesday night—monitored by our correspondent—El-Rufai said the coalition is considering the move to guard against possible infiltration of the ADC by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which could destabilize their efforts.
He accused the APC-led federal government of actively working to undermine the opposition by enticing members with promises of appointments, financial inducements, and automatic tickets for the 2027 elections.
“For those who resist joining the APC, the government uses agencies like the EFCC, ICPC, and CCB to intimidate them through threats of investigation,” he claimed.
El-Rufai also warned that the ruling party may attempt to trigger internal crises in the ADC by manipulating longstanding members to publicly reject the coalition, thereby sabotaging the opposition’s unity.
“Our alliance within the ADC is not permanent. We are prepared to register a new party if the government succeeds in destabilizing the ADC,” he noted.
Describing the APC’s strategy as a deliberate assault on democratic principles, El-Rufai alleged that the ruling party is orchestrating turmoil within rival parties—including the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP—to weaken their capacity ahead of the next elections.
His comments follow the recent adoption of the ADC as the provisional platform for a united opposition front unveiled in Abuja.
