EFCC Investigates Fresh Allegations Against Atiku Abubakar

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reopened an investigation into allegations involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following a petition submitted by a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma.

The commission confirmed receiving the petition dated August 27, 2026, on September 1, and disclosed that investigations into the matter had commenced.

Agbonayinma, through his lawyer, Chief Hannibal Uwaifo, SAN, asked the anti-graft agency to review allegations connected to an earlier investigation involving the former vice president.

As part of the ongoing process, the EFCC invited the former lawmaker to its headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, on October 12, for questioning. He arrived at about 9:58 a.m. and departed at approximately 4:07 p.m. after adopting his petition and responding to questions from investigators.

The commission’s acknowledgement letter, bearing reference number CR:3000/EFCC/HQ/SDC-2/VOL.3/398, was cited as part of the documentation relating to the petition.

Speaking with journalists, Agbonayinma said his petition seeks to revisit an investigation conducted during the tenure of former EFCC Chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

He argued that the matter should receive renewed attention in the interest of accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

“I want to thank Nigerians, the EFCC and those praying for me in this struggle. The laws are meant for both the rich and the poor. After the EFCC has done a fantastic job, it should not be kept under the table,” he said.

The former lawmaker maintained that drawing the attention of relevant authorities to alleged wrongdoing was part of his constitutional responsibility, stressing that nobody should be considered above the law.

Agbonayinma also disclosed that he had written to United States President Donald Trump concerning the allegations, seeking his attention to the matter.

However, the reopening of the investigation does not in itself establish any wrongdoing by Atiku Abubakar, and the allegations remain subject to the outcome of the EFCC’s inquiries.
