EFCC clarifies death of citizen during Lekki sting operation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of a man identified as Endurance Udeke, a resident of Periwinkle Estate, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

According to the Commission, operatives had conducted a sting operation at the estate on November 4, 2025, targeting suspected internet fraudsters. The EFCC said the operation went smoothly, resulting in the arrest of four suspects from various apartments within the estate.

However, the agency disclosed that Udeke and another resident of apartment W6a attempted to evade arrest by jumping from a four-storey building. While the second individual survived after receiving medical attention, Udeke succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to save his life.

“The Commission, as a responsible law enforcement agency, contacted Udeke’s family with details of the circumstances leading to his death,” the EFCC said in a statement, adding that the family appreciated the medical interventions made before his passing.

The EFCC described the incident as shocking, stressing that there was no contact between its operatives and the deceased before the fatal jump. The matter, according to the agency, has been reported to the Police, which has since commenced an investigation.

While expressing regret over the incident, the EFCC urged the public to remain calm, noting that individuals with no reason to fear the law should not panic during its operations.
