By ABIODUN JIMOH, ABEOKUTA
Dr, Adebayo Oluwatosin, Africa Regional President, Scholarship Aid Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has tasked Federal Government to scrap all current education curriculum in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
He hereby advised President Muhammadu Buhari to declare state of emergency in educational sector, urging government to encourage students by awarding scholarships to study abroad.
The regional president noted this at a media briefing held at the Intellectual Harvard College of Management, Obada, Abeokuta Ogun State on Monday.
He emphasised that scrapping of current education curriculum and declaration of state of emergency would help to promote education as well as giving hope to the youths for a better tomorrow.
Furthermore, he confirmed that the federal government has failed to encourage students who are diligent in their studies, adding that rather than encouraging students, government always awards millions of naira to participants of some programmes that would not add any informative, educative or moral value.
Dr. Oluwatosin said: ”We called for this conference today because of the problem going on in the society, particularly among the youths which we believe are the leaders of tomorrow.
”We realized that our youths no longer see education as road to success, rather they see criminal acts as the only way to become successful in the society.
“That is why they involve in internet scam popularly called yahoo-yahoo, money rituals, kidnapping and many more. But in order for us to prove this wrong and redeem the image of our lovely country already battered.
“Some organizations have come with an idea to motivate the youths, encourage them and show them that through education you can become a successful person and even more in life.
”Our society today does not promote education or encourage students who are in their studies, that is why a first class student or even the best graduating student of a university will be given N10,000, or N50,000 as prize money, or even only handshake.
“While some participants of a reality show programmes that did not add any informative, educative or moral value were being awarded millions of naira with other benefits.
”My advice to the federal government is to first scrap all current education curriculum in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. They should declare state of emergency in education. Government should introduce new trend that can change education.
“I am calling on the federal government to encourage scholarships for students to study outside the country.”
Therefore, the organization promised to set up an annual programme, a television reality show programme which he named ‘The Rising Genius’, saying that the programme will help to motivate the youth in order for them to make education a priority.
