DSS DG Orders Release, Compensation for Wrongfully Arrested Businesswoman and Others

The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the immediate release of Mrs. Chineze Ozoadibe, an Abuja-based businesswoman who was mistakenly arrested during a crackdown on an illegal oil bunkering syndicate.
In addition to her release, Mr. Ajayi approved a compensation of ₦10 million for Mrs. Ozoadibe, acknowledging that her arrest was in error. Furthermore, five other individuals who were similarly wrongfully detained have also been awarded a combined ₦10 million in compensation, to be shared equally among them.
According to a credible security source, Mrs. Ozoadibe’s arrest occurred after she was handed over to the DSS by another security agency as part of a broader operation targeting oil bunkering activities. However, a thorough investigation by DSS officers later established that her detention was coincidental and unjustified.
“Once the DG was convinced that the woman was not involved, he immediately ordered her release and compensation,” the source confirmed.
The official described this move as part of a growing culture of accountability within the DSS since Mr. Ajayi assumed leadership.
“Under Mr. Ajayi, compensating wrongfully detained individuals is becoming institutional practice. He believes that security agencies must take responsibility when errors are made,” the source added.
Citing a past example, the source recalled the case of a Jos-based businessman who was mistakenly shot by DSS operatives in 2016. Although a Federal High Court awarded the victim ₦10 million in damages, it wasn’t until Mr. Ajayi’s appointment that the compensation was paid—and even doubled to ₦20 million, along with an offer of free lifetime medical care.
Mr. Ajayi, described as a seasoned intelligence professional, is said to have emphasized to DSS personnel the importance of due diligence and human rights when he took office.
“He made it clear from day one that while mistakes are sometimes inevitable, integrity lies in owning up to them and making amends,” the source noted. “That’s why he instructed the legal department to ensure every case goes through rigorous due process before any arrest is made.”
The DSS under Mr. Ajayi has reportedly adopted stricter internal protocols to minimize wrongful arrests, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to professionalism and justice.
