DSS arrests Osun-based Islamic Cleric over pro-palestine protest
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested an Osun State–based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, following a pro-Palestine protest organised by his group, Ta’awunu Muslimeen, in the state.
According to Western Post, Sheikh Molaasan was taken into custody after a video circulated online showing him and his followers staging a demonstration calling for the liberation of Palestine, which is currently under Israeli occupation.
The viral footage captured members of the group marching in Iwo, Osun State, while hoisting the Palestinian flag and chanting religious slogans. The video generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians raising security concerns about the group’s activities.
Ta’awunu Muslimeen, which describes itself as an organisation committed to Islamic teachings and global Muslim causes, has previously organised similar pro-Palestine activities, including a demonstration in 2018.
However, aspects of the recent march sparked controversy. Critics pointed to coordinated arm gestures by participants, drawing comparisons to Nazi-style salutes, while the presence of children chanting intense religious slogans further heightened public concern.
The incident has reignited debates around public safety and religious extremism, especially against the backdrop of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. As of the time of filing this report, the DSS has not issued an official statement detailing the charges against Sheikh Molaasan or the status of ongoing investigations.
