DHQ denies allegations of Guards Brigade on high alert amid coup suspicions

In response to recent online reports alleging the Nigerian Guards Brigade had been placed on high alert due to suspected coup activity, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has vehemently refuted these claims.

The article, published on Saharareporters.com on February 25, 2024, suggested unusual movements within the Guards Brigade had prompted concerns of a coup plot, allegedly leading to emergency meetings involving President Bola Tinubu and other high-ranking officials.

In a statement, Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau dismissed these allegations as baseless and without merit.

It clarified that the Guards Brigade, tasked with protecting the Presidency and the Federal Capital Territory, maintained a standard state of readiness to fulfill its duties effectively.

“This routine preparedness is not indicative of any heightened security concerns beyond its mandate,” he said.

He said General Christopher Musa the Chief of Defence Staff, had consistently emphasized the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to uphold and safeguard democracy within the nation.

The DHQ unequivocally condemned the unfounded claims, attributing them to the imagination of the publisher.

It urged the public to disregard the allegations as false and misleading.

The DHQ called upon relevant security agencies to take prompt action against Saharareporters for disseminating what it termed as unpatriotic misinformation.

Moreover, it announced the DHQ’s intention to pursue legal recourse against the publication, citing its potential to incite unnecessary tension within the country.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau reaffirmed DHQ’s commitment to transparency and urged the public to remain vigilant against misleading narratives that could undermine national security.
