Democracy Day: Let’s deppen our democracy – Senator Adeola (YAYI)
As the nation celebrates yet another Democracy Day marking almost two decades of unbroken democratic rule, Senator Solomon Adeola (APC-Lagos West), the chairman of Senate Committee on Local Content has call on all Nigerians to continue to work towards the deepening of the nation’s democratic experience as alternatives to democratic rule remains odious in the comity of nations.
In a congratulatory message to all Nigerians, the senator stated that while democracy dividends in terms of socio-economic and infrastructure development may be slow in coming and in limited spheres in the last 19 years owning to many factors like inexperience, external forces and mis-governance by some officials, it is still better to continue to develop under a democratic system of government under the rule of law than any authoritarian system.
“As an active participant in elective positions at state and federal government levels in our current nascent democracy, my position is for both the leaders and the led to continue to work to ensure the survival of our democracy with qualitative developments as occurred in 2015 when a ruling political party for the first time transferred power to an opposition party”, the senator stated.
Senator Adeola stated that we need to work on establishing internal democracy in our political parties as well as ensure that impunity of all kinds at all levels of government are reduced to the barest minimum, if not totally eliminated stressing that there is need to ensure that credible leaders with the interest of the people at heart are elected through a free and fair electoral process.
The senator urged all eligible citizens to ensure they register to vote as well as collect their Permanent Voters’ Card, PVC as this is an important aspect of their willingness to participate in electing credible leaders as well as deepen our democracy.
