Dele Momodu reacts to Ben Murray-Bruce’s defection to APC, says opposition viewed as “stupid”

Dele Momodu, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has offered his perspective on former Bayelsa senator Ben Murray-Bruce’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on Friday, Momodu said he wasn’t surprised by Murray-Bruce’s move, suggesting the former senator simply chose the more convenient political path.

Murray-Bruce had earlier announced his switch to the ruling APC in a Facebook post on Wednesday, stating that he was aligning with the party not for politics, but “for progress.” He also praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In response, Momodu expressed disappointment but acknowledged the senator’s constitutional right to change political affiliations.

“I watched it in utter disbelief,” Momodu said. “I had assumed he was part of our efforts during the Atiku campaign in the last election. Perhaps my judgment was wrong. But that’s politics, and nothing surprises me anymore.”

He went on to say that while some politicians might have valid reasons for switching parties—particularly if it aligns with personal ambitions—Murray-Bruce’s decision reflected a broader trend.

“For many, the APC is simply where things are easier right now,” Momodu noted. “Those of us who remain in the opposition are often seen as foolish or naive for not joining the political bandwagon.”

The Ovation Magazine founder’s comments underscore growing tensions within Nigeria’s opposition ranks, as high-profile defections continue to reshape the political landscape ahead of future elections.
