Defence Minister reaffirms central role of air power at NAF decoration ceremony

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has restated the pivotal role of air power in Nigeria’s ongoing security operations, describing it as “central to the successes recorded across multiple theatres.”

Speaking at the decoration ceremony for newly promoted senior officers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at its Headquarters in Abuja, the Minister said the elevation of Air Commodores and Air Vice Marshals reflects the Federal Government’s confidence in their capacity to provide strategic leadership at a critical moment for national security.

General Musa noted that the promotions come with expanded responsibilities vital to safeguarding the nation and advancing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “The expectations placed on you are high because your elevated position requires clear vision, steady judgment, and an enduring sense of purpose,” he said. He urged the officers to approach their new roles with discipline, humility, and renewed commitment to excellence.

The Minister acknowledged the decisive impact of air power in precision strikes, tactical mobility, and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, commending NAF for strengthening joint operations across the armed forces. He stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges demand deeper inter-service cooperation, stating that “air operations achieve their full potential only when seamlessly integrated with the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, and all national security agencies.”

Also speaking at the event, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, congratulated the newly promoted officers, describing military rank as a symbol of diligence, competence, and character. He noted that the ceremony was taking place amid evolving security threats such as terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, banditry, and emerging cyber risks.
“Rank is not only worn on the shoulders; it is carried in the mind and in the character,” he said, charging the officers to transform strategic directives into tangible results.

Both leaders paid tribute to fallen heroes and personnel wounded in battle, acknowledging their sacrifices as a solemn reminder of the weight of leadership. General Musa also praised the families of the promoted officers for their resilience and support throughout their service.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving national security, the Minister said the Ministry of Defence would continue strengthening the Armed Forces through strategic guidance, capacity building, and enhanced institutional oversight. He commended the CAS for steering the Air Force toward increased professionalism and operational effectiveness, while expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his sustained support to the military.

The ceremony ended with goodwill messages to the newly decorated officers as they assume higher responsibilities in defending the nation.
