Dangote Refinery Halts Discount Scheme After Uncovering Fuel Diversion Scam

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has suspended its fuel discount initiative following the discovery of a diversion scheme involving some of its affiliate marketers and strategic partners.

An internal investigation revealed that marketers who received discounted petroleum products—intended to enhance affordability and ensure consistent supply across retail outlets—had been diverting the products to unauthorized third-party dealers.

According to the refinery, these marketers abused their access by allowing unregistered fuel importers to collect products using their official Authority To Collect (ATC) documents. This manipulation enabled the third parties to profit from the price advantage without bearing the standard costs tied to logistics, compliance, or retail infrastructure.

The discount program was originally established to help registered affiliates maintain competitive profit margins while strengthening nationwide availability of Dangote’s refined products. However, the scheme has now been put on hold after it was found to be exploited for personal gain, undermining its intended purpose.
