COAS decorates Army Spokesperson Anele as Colonel, emphasises public trust in military operations

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu (NAM), has decorated the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, with the rank of Colonel, marking a significant milestone in her career and reaffirming the centrality of public trust to Nigeria’s military operations.

The decoration ceremony, held on 9 December 2025 at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, was conducted on behalf of the COAS by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi. The event drew senior military officers, veterans, family members and well-wishers, reflecting the wide respect Colonel Anele commands within the Nigerian Army.

In his remarks, the COAS praised Anele for her consistent professionalism, discipline and dedication, noting that her contributions to Army public relations have strengthened the institution’s engagement with the Nigerian public. He tasked the Directorate of Army Public Relations with sustaining responsible, credible and timely communication, stressing that transparent engagement remains essential in reinforcing national confidence in the Armed Forces.

Lieutenant General Shaibu underscored that modern military operations rely heavily on public trust and understanding. He therefore urged the Directorate to intensify its strategic communication efforts, projecting the military’s activities accurately while countering misinformation and fostering stronger civil-military relations.

He also encouraged Colonel Anele to continue mentoring younger officers, noting that her leadership would be vital in enhancing the directorate’s capacity and improving the Army’s overall communication architecture.

In her response, Colonel Anele expressed deep appreciation to God, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and the COAS for what she described as transformative leadership and guidance throughout her career. She credited their support for her elevation and pledged to continue serving with loyalty, diligence and integrity.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were former Army spokesperson Brigadier General Sani Usman Kukasheka (Rtd), Colonel Mustapha Anka (Rtd), serving senior officers, and members of the Army Public Relations community.

The ceremony was coordinated by Major Akinola Ajibola, Acting Staff Officer 1 (Information/Publicity), Headquarters Directorate of Army Public Relations.
