Civil society charge Edo government over abandoned central hospital
Civil Society Organisations in Edo State have called upon Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki to find a lasting solution to the abandoned Central hospital in Benin City.
Almost two years when it was commissioned, the former governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole at the inauguration ceremony stated that the state government had paid for all the equipment at the hospital.
The Coordinator-General, Edo Civil Society Organisations, Comrade Omobude Agho, challenged the state government to take responsibility for the official silence surrounding the multi-billion 120 bed space hospital complex.
It could be recalled that the gigantic hospital project was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari at the twilight of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s administration, amid funfair.
Omobude disclosed this when the group made a brief stop over at the hospital complex during the June 12 Democracy Day rally held on Tuesday in Benin City.
According to him, “A 5 star hospital that was built with over 15 billion naira of Edo tax payers money, and was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari two years ago, is still under lock and key.
“As we speak, not a bottle of paracetamol has come out of that place. There are not beds or equipment in the hospital.”
He also recalled that President Buhari had sought a legislative backing, declaring June 12 every year as Nigeria Democracy Day Celebrations in memory of Chief Moshood Abiola, the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 Presidential election which was annulled by the military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd.).
The activist however commended the roles of the traditional rulers in Nigeria, the media and CSO’s for being steadfast since the struggle to remember Nigerians who stacked their lives for the survival of Nigeria.
