CHURCH WARDEN SEEKS FOR PLEA BARGAIN OVER N18.5MILLION SCAM
A Church Warden,Banji Oguntayo has sought for plea bargain over his alleged duped of his church member to the tune of N18.5milion.
Oguntayo was earlier quizzed by the police and after investigation and admittance of guilt, he requested for plea bargain to refund the money
The troubled warden of Saviour Anglican Church in Abeokuta, who reside in Oke-Ata area of the town was alleged to have under false pretence took over landed properties of the victim,Chief Jacob Erinle,which are sighted across the town and sold them without remmitance of the sales.
His invitation by the police followed a petition written by a Non-Governmental Organisation on behalf of the victim, a pensioner and who double as elder (Baba Ijo) of same church the Oguntayo serves as a warden.
Oguntayo after investigation owned up to the offence,with undertaking to pay the money,a plea consented to by the complainant,hence, the police withdrew the charge to take him to court.
The plea bargain undertaking made available to our correspondent showed that,he staggered the payment to end by December,2017
‘I shall pay the sum of N1million by the last day in June,2017. I shall pay the sum of N1,700,000 by the end of July and the balance of N15,800,000 shall be paid by end of December,2017’,the plea bargain stated.
The undertaking as signed by Banji Oguntayo, Chief Jacob Erinle(complainant) and Adebayo Ayorinde(witness) has it that,Oguntayo pledged to also deposit the original title documents of his building,an uncompleted hotel valued at N60miion situated at Oke-Ata area of Abeokuta
‘I shall deposit the original title documents of my building which is an uncompleted hotel building consisting of a main hall,2 chalet and 8 standard rooms with conviniences valued at N60,000,000 situate at Oke-Ata Housing Estate,Abeokuta to Chief Jacob Tunji Erinle to be held as a security.
Oguntayo who also withdrew a petition he wrote against the police for interrogating him over his business deal with the complainant, emphasised in the undertaking note that,if he failed to redeem his pledge,the police should institute all necessary legal action against him.
‘Where I fail,neglect or refuse to pay the sums as herein promised, the police authorities shall institute all necessary legal action against me in accordance with the law’,he wrote
Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer,Abimbola Oyeyemi when contacted confirmed the development,stating that,the suspect and complaint had reached agreement to resolve the issue.
He,however,pointed out that,if the suspect reneged on his promise, a legal action would be filed against him.
