Buhari Undergoing Medical Treatment in London After Health Scare
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is currently receiving medical care in London following a reported decline in health during a recent visit to the United Kingdom.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023, had initially traveled to the UK for what was described as a routine medical check-up. However, sources close to his family told Premium Times that his condition worsened shortly after arriving in the country.
“There are differing reports on exactly when his health began to deteriorate,” a family source said. “Some claim he fell ill in Nigeria and was flown out, while others say he became unwell after reaching London for his regular check-up.”
Confirming the situation, his former media aide, Garba Shehu, issued a statement acknowledging the ex-president’s illness. “Yes, former President Muhammadu Buhari is currently unwell and receiving treatment in the United Kingdom,” Shehu said. “He had indicated publicly that he was traveling for his annual medical review. Unfortunately, he took ill while there. The good news is that he is now recovering steadily. We are hopeful for his full recovery.”
Specific details about the nature of Buhari’s illness or the medical facility where he is being treated have not been made public.
Throughout his time in office, Buhari was known for frequent medical visits to the UK—trips that often raised questions about the state of healthcare services in Nigeria. Notable instances include:
- February 2016: His first known medical visit to London for undisclosed reasons.
- June 2016: A trip to treat an ear infection, which drew criticism from the Nigerian Medical Association.
- January 2017: A 50-day stay in the UK for medical reasons, which caused widespread concern due to limited information.
- May 2017: His longest medical absence, lasting 104 days, amid growing speculation about his health.
During these absences, arrangements were reportedly made for him to stay in a private apartment near the hospital to ensure privacy and accessibility.
Although Buhari appeared to be in better health after leaving office in 2023, sources say his condition began to decline again around April 2025. Since then, he has remained abroad for ongoing treatment.
