Boxers storm Alake sports centre for debut Ogun governor’s belt on Saturday

Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta will be the centre of attraction as scores of boxers vie for honour at the maiden edition of Ogun Governor’s Belt on Saturday, December 14th, 2019.
Also slated for the day is the induction of boxers into the 11th Quarterly Boxing Hall of Fame, and commissioning of the Olympic standard boxing ring expected to be commissioned by the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Ogun State Boxing Association, Ajani Aremu during media briefing held at the sports council, Ijeja, to herald the much awaited boxing event.
Aremu hinted that the boxing event will feature 10 competitive bouts and two exhibition bouts, adding that the best boxer out of all the ten competitive bouts will emerge champion, and hitherto goes home with the Governor’s belt at the end.
He hereby appealed to stakeholders and well meaning individuals to invest in boxing. “Boxing is a seriousness business and needs the contributions of all stakeholders across the state.
In the same vein, David Osuolale, secretary of the Association narrated that the event will feature ten bouts in which seven will be keenly contested in the male category while other three bouts are for female boxers.
Furthermore, the scribe affirmed that the Governor’s Belt will be an annual event, while the quarterly boxing hall of fame bouts will continue to be on quarterly basis. “The event will also be used to commission the association’s newly acquired Olympic standard boxing ring. All the bouts will be staged inside the ring.”
Osuolola however thanked Chairman, Ogun State Boxing Hall of Fame, Hon. Wale Edun for his support over the years, just as he urged spectators and lovers of boxing to purchase their N2,000 T-shirt at the venue, being an entry ticket to the boxing arena.
In another development, Director of Sports at the state sports council, Sola Faleti remarked that since governor Dapo Abiodun assumed office, sports have been getting tremendous support from his administration.
“The Governor’s Belt boxing event is in recognition and to appreciate the governor’s commitment in reviving sports in the state. I am calling on parents and guardians to encourage their children to participate in boxing, being a gentleman’s game,” he stressed.
