Biodun Oyebanji: Bringing the Renewed Hope Agenda to Ekiti

When Biodun Oyebanji was sworn in as Governor of Ekiti State in October 2022, expectations were high. The “Land of Honour and Integrity” had long battled with economic stagnation, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits. Yet, from his earliest days in office, Oyebanji made it clear that his mission was to align Ekiti with the federal government’s agenda- transforming policies into tangible progress for ordinary people.
A Grassroots Governor
Unlike many politicians, Oyebanji’s style has been remarkably down-to-earth. He is often described by citizens as “the people’s governor” because of his accessibility and genuine concern for community welfare. His approach to governance emphasises inclusivity, with an open-door policy that invites traditional leaders, civil servants, and ordinary citizens to participate in shaping the state’s future.

The governor has repeatedly stressed that without modern infrastructure, economic hope will remain elusive.

Education and healthcare have also featured prominently in Oyebanji’s Renewed Hope adaptation. Ekiti, traditionally known for its passion for learning, has seen investments in schools, teacher training, and scholarship schemes for indigent students. Similarly, healthcare delivery is being strengthened through new primary health centres and the upgrading of existing facilities, with particular attention to maternal and child health.
Social investment programmes targeting the poor and vulnerable are gradually expanding, reflecting Oyebanji’s belief that no Ekiti citizen should be left behind. In line with the federal government’s policy direction, conditional cash transfers and empowerment grants are being rolled out to cushion the impact of current economic reforms.
Restoring Confidence in Governance
Perhaps Oyebanji’s greatest achievement so far lies in rebuilding trust between government and the people. By prioritising transparency, accountability, and collaboration with local communities, he has positioned himself as a leader who understands that governance is not about rhetoric but about delivering results.
For many residents, this has reignited faith that Ekiti can rise above its challenges and claim its rightful place as a centre of knowledge, innovation, and culture in Nigeria.
