Bauchi Teaching Hospital Confirms Inclusion in Subsidised Kidney Dialysis Scheme

…897 Patients Benefited

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has reaffirmed its participation in the Federal Government’s subsidised kidney dialysis programme, noting that 897 patients have accessed the service since it began in January 2025.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the hospital’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Usman Koli, clarified that its omission from an earlier list of facilities offering the programme was an error.

“ATBUTH Bauchi has been delivering subsidised dialysis sessions at the approved cost of ₦12,000 since January 8, 2025. So far, 897 patients have benefitted. The fee covers all consumables, ensuring patients and families face less financial strain. Beneficiaries cut across Bauchi State, the North-East, and neighbouring states,” Koli said.

He highlighted the hospital’s alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that ATBUTH has been instrumental in several other national health interventions.

Since November 2024, the hospital has provided free Caesarean section services—covering surgery, drugs, aftercare, and neonatal treatment—to more than 1,000 mothers and newborns. ATBUTH also pioneered the rollout of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), offering free emergency treatment for up to 48 hours. Over 500 patients, including accident victims, have already benefitted.

Commending the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Koli assured that the hospital would continue to strengthen access to affordable and compassionate healthcare for Nigerians.

He said: “For avoidance of doubt, ATBUTH Bauchi is fully part of the subsidised kidney dialysis scheme and remains at the forefront of national health initiatives. We are committed to easing the burden on Nigerians, especially the most vulnerable, through the continued support of the Federal Government.”

It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu recently directed a 76 per cent reduction in the cost of dialysis across federal hospitals, bringing it down from about ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session. The policy has since been rolled out in teaching hospitals and federal medical centres across all six geopolitical zones.
