Avoid actions that threatens national peace- Edo Rights Coalition cautioned to shun protest over Kanu’s case

The Coalition for Peace, Justice and National Stability (CPJNS) has cautioned the Edo Rights Coalition against proceeding with its planned protest in support of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, warning that such action could undermine public peace and national security.

In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by its convener, Nuhu Makama, the group urged the coalition and its supporters to “desist from actions capable of threatening the nation’s stability,” stressing that Kanu’s case remains before a competent court and must be allowed to follow due judicial process.

Makama noted that staging protests over a matter that is sub judice could exert undue pressure on the judiciary and be perceived as an attempt to influence court proceedings outside the bounds of legality.

He warned that similar protests in the past had been hijacked by miscreants and politically motivated individuals, leading to violence, vandalism, and public disorder.

“At this critical period in our national journey, Nigerians must prioritize peace, cohesion, and development above sentiments or sectional interests,” Makama stated. “True patriotism lies in upholding democratic values, respecting the rule of law, and supporting institutions of justice — not in actions that could derail them.”

The CPJNS further urged civic and advocacy groups to channel their demands through lawful and peaceful means that promote unity rather than endanger it, emphasizing that while the right to peaceful assembly is constitutionally guaranteed, it must be exercised responsibly and with respect for judicial authority.
