Atiku: My Focus Is a Better Nigeria, Not Personal Ambition

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emphasized that his political focus is on building a better Nigeria, not pursuing the presidency at all costs.

Speaking through Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, at an affirmation event for new members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos on Saturday, Atiku said his priority is good governance and national progress—not personal political ambition.

“Atiku Abubakar’s commitment is to the future of Nigeria. It’s not about becoming president by any means. What truly matters is having a government that works for the people,” Olateju said on his behalf.

Atiku, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with several key opposition figures, described the ADC as a people-driven movement focused on reshaping the country, rather than just another political party.

He highlighted the need for leadership that can address critical challenges such as inflation and economic hardship, especially in the wake of the fuel subsidy removal.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Atiku reiterated that the ADC’s presidential candidate would be selected through an open and credible process.

“Whoever emerges through a transparent process will receive our total support. This isn’t about Atiku or Obi—it’s about putting Nigeria first,” he said.

The event also marked the formal reception of several high-profile defectors from the PDP, including Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu of the party’s Board of Trustees; former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle; ex-Youth Leader Tai Benedict, among others.

They were welcomed by ADC leaders such as National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State Chairman George Ashiru.
