Assembly sets up committee to investigate ex-Speaker over N100m Dangote ‘bribe’

The Kano State House of Assembly has set up a five-man committee to investigate the corruption allegations leveled against its immediate past Speaker, Alhaji Kabiru Rurum.
The decision of the Assembly to investigate the allegations, which was proposed to the House by the new Speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Atta, at the plenary, was unanimously accepted by the House.
Atta, who, was elected and sworn in on Monday shortly after Rurum’s resignation, set up the committee to investigate the matter and submit its report within three months.
The Deputy Chief Whip of the Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Butu-Butu, the member representing Rimin Gado/Tofa Constituency, was appointed as chairman of the committee.
Similarly, at the plenary, the Assembly also elected Alhaji Abdulaziz Gafasa, the member representing Ajingi Local Government, as its new Majority Leader.
Ajingi’s election was sequel to the election of the former Majority Leader (Atta), as the Speaker.
Again, at the session, the Assembly had impeached the Deputy Majority leader, Alhaji Maifada Bello, the member representing Kibiya Constituency.
Bello was accused of siding with the former speaker, who is currently being investigated.
Bella’s impeachment followed a motion moved by a member representing Nasarawa Constituency, Alhaji Ibrahim Gama, with an impeachment letter signed by 31 out of the 40 members.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the former speaker had in his resignation letter said he resigned in order to protect his image and that of his constituency over the corruption allegations.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the plenary session, Rurum urged his colleagues to be fair and just while conducting their investigation.
Rurum was accused of allegedly collecting N100 million from prominent businessman, Aliko Dangote, to scuttle the probe of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
