APC Chairmanship Timeline: Power Shifts, Politics, and the Rise of Yilwatda

At its formation, Chief Bisi Akande was the protem National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress.

Chief Akande hails from Osun state, South West of the country. He was selected because of his experience and reliability. He was also selected because a northerner was going to be the party’s presidential flag bearer. He was a secretary to the old Oyo state government; deputy governor to Chief Bola Ige and later governor of Osun state.

He was APC national chairman between 2013 when it was formed and 2014.

In 2014, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun succeeded him as the national chairman of the party. He hails from Edo state and was also governor of the state. He spent four years in office between 2014 and 2018. Late Muhammadu Buhari from the north won the 2015 presidential election with Oyegun from the south as the party chairman.

In the 2018 APC national convention, Chief Oyegun stepped down on the eve of the convention when it had become clear that Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole, another former governor of Edo state was going to floor him. Oshiomole’s tenure was the most dramatic and eventful in the party’s history. He however, delivered the presidential election victory to Buhari in 2019.

A year later, high powered political chess game and manipulations commenced and in the end, Oshiomole became a victim of the schemings all aimed at ensuring that his political mentor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not get the party’s ticket for the next presidential election slated for 2023.

Mai Mala Buni was selected as the party’s national chairman when it should have been a southerner to complete Oshiomole’s tenure that was to end in 2022 when a northerner should assume the office in readiness of a southerner emerging as the party’s 2023 presidential flag bearer.

Sen Abdullahi Adamu succeeded him in 2022. He was also governor of Nasarawa state. Adamu did not hide his disdain towards Tinubu prior to the party’s presidential primary. When Tinubu said that Buhari tried it first time, second time and third time and failed but succeeded after he supported him, Adamu saw a good opportunity to strike. A man who was in PDP when APC was formed then addressed the press and said that Tinubu would pay for making that statement but eventually under his watch, Tinubu defeated a sitting vice president, a sitting senate president who was Adamu’s choice, ministers who just resigned and governors to win the party’s primary.

He was removed on July 17, 2023.

Sen Abubakar Kyari who’s presently the Minister of agriculture acted as national chairman between July 17& August 3, 2023.

On August 3, 2023, the unexpected happened as Dr Abdullahi Ganduje was announced as the new chairman of the party. Ganduje is from north west and a lot of political watchers wondered why a slot meant for north central should be given to north west. It was one of the jokers President Tinubu has used that was initially frowned at but which in the end, have produced good results.

He resigned from the office on June 27, 2026 and Ali Bukar Dalori acted between June 27 – July 24, 2025.

Then, the north central, through Prof Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda who was APC gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections took back their position.

Yilwatda picked up immediately from where Ganduje stopped by bringing into the party top political actors across the country including past and present governors, senators, house of reps members etc.

And since assuming office till date, the party have added ten governors, several number of senators and reps members to its rank. Ganduje also played his part in this regard.

Yesterday, at the Eagle Square, at the well attended and well organized convention, he emerged as the substantive national chairman of the party who shall supervise the party’s activities towards next year’s general elections.

And in 2030, the seat of the national chairman of APC shall return to the south in preparation for a northern candidate for the party’s for 2031 presidential election.
