Breaking: Amupitan Appointed as New INEC Chairman with Council of State’s Approval

The National Council of State has given unanimous approval to the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This announcement was made in a post on X by Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday.

During the Council’s meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu formally presented Amupitan’s nomination. His appointment comes as a successor to Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who concluded his 10-year term in October 2025.

President Tinubu noted that Amupitan, a 58-year-old Law Professor from Kogi State, is the first individual from the state to be nominated for the INEC Chairmanship.
