Aminu Kano Hospital Conducts Another Cardiac Surgery

The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has conducted another successful cardiac pacemaker implantation surgery on an 87-yr old Alhaji Shehu Bashir Nababa.
A statement signed by Alhaji Aminu Inuwa, a deputy director of information in the hospital, said the patient was received at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit with third degree heart block (low heart rate less than 40 beats per minute), syncopal attack and High Blood Pressure.

The statement quoted Doctor Isma’il Muhammad Inuwa, leader of team of doctors that conducted the operation as saying, “the pacemaker lead electrode wire was inserted into the right ventricle through a vein in the left upper chest and the electrode was connected to the pulse generator placed under the skin.

“The function of the pacemaker is to increase the heart rate to at least 60 beats per minute as against the less than 40 beats per minute.”

He, however, drew the attention of the general public to be more vigilant on the signs and symptoms of heart rate problem, as according to him some people including health experts wrongly presume or treat such problem as epilepsy.

The operation, which was conducted by a combined team of doctors from Cardiology, Radiology and Anesthesiology departments as well as specialized nurses, lasted for one and half hours.

Speaking, 48 hours after the operation, the 87-yr old patient, Alhaji Shehu Bashir Nababa, expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for saving him from the trouble of recurrent seizure, his children for financing the operation and the team of specialists who conducted the surgery.

In his remarks, Nababa’s eldest son, Alhaji Mukhtar Shehu said in spite the cost implication of the procedure, no amount of money could compromise health.
