Akpabio, Akume Urge Nigerians to Remain Patient, Hopeful Amid Reforms
Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, have appealed to Nigerians to stay patient and optimistic as the Bola Tinubu administration implements reforms aimed at economic recovery and national renewal.
Both leaders spoke on Sunday in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, at the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio encouraged citizens not to lose faith despite current economic challenges, assuring that the government’s policies will soon yield prosperity.
“The foundations of this house are being rebuilt. A nation is like a mighty cathedral—it cannot be raised overnight, but stone by stone, hand by hand, prayer by prayer,” he said. “Let us renew our faith in Nigeria, banish despair, and walk together—church and state, pulpit and parliament—towards a brighter dawn.”
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, SGF Akume stressed that the administration was committed to building a country that works for all. He highlighted ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy, attract investments, and implement long-term reforms.
“This government came into office with a promise to renew hope and strengthen our democracy. We are determined to ensure that no one is left behind in our social investment programmes,” Akume said, while urging the Church to continue supporting national development efforts.
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, also addressed the gathering, commending the Catholic Church for its global role in promoting justice and democratic values. He outlined his administration’s interventions to reduce poverty and improve the lives of vulnerable groups, calling for greater collaboration with faith-based organisations.
The conference was attended by the Apostolic Nuncio and Papal representative, Most Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, alongside Catholic bishops from across Nigeria, members of the National Assembly, and hundreds of Catholic faithful.
