Adoption Of Schools: Ogun Government Seeks Corporate Bodies, Philanthropists Cooperation

By ABIODUN JIMOH, ABEOKUTA

Desire to retain its leadership position in educational sector in Nigeria, Ogun State government has called on philanthropists and corporate bodies to key into the initiative of adopting at least a school in their localities and rehabilitate them.

By this adoption, the government believed will improve the standard and well being of pupils and students in their communities and state at large.

Governor Dapo Abiodun made this clarion call during this year International Students’ Day Celebration held at June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta on Monday, whereby thousands of students across all the four zones in the state participated in the event.

Abiodun, ably represented by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu emphasised that about 956 schools are currently undergoing renovation and rehabilitation across the state.

Adding that some have been completed while some are still ongoing, based on the fact that his administration place a lot of importance on education.

He averred: “The state government pays regularly running cost to heads of schools to run the schools properly in order not to levy the students unnecessarily.

“Our administration has embarked on promotions of teachers. We have cleared backlog of promotions from 2015, 2016, 2017 to make the teachers comfortable and alive to their responsibilities.”

“However, I am using this medium to call on our philanthropists and corporate organizations to key into the adopt school initiative by adopting a school in their localities and rehabilitate them. This will enhance the performances of our students across the state.

In the same vein, the governor announced that his administration will soon begin the payment of bursary to all students within and outside the state. Noting that scholarship will be given to students who excel in their academic activities and indigent students.

In another development, Comrade Adeyemi Azeez, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Matters in his admonition at the event themed ‘Harnessing the Articulacy and Vibrancy of Nigeria Student Leaders for Larger Politics’ elaborated that this year’s celebration was to harness the potentials of the students into the larger polity

Adeyemi revealed that the current administration led by Governor Dapo Abiodun has maintained a very good relationship with the students and recognized students as partners in progress.

Furthermore, he highlighted that the celebration was to mentor the students and prepare them for future responsibilities and improve on the good legacies laid by the forbearers.

“This gathering is targeted to mentor our students and spur them into critical understanding of the level of preparedness they should attain to sustain and improve on the good legacies of our forbearers in the political atmosphere.

“We must tow the path and impact the larger society. This feat will be achieved by actively participating in the various sessions of these engagements to be handled by persons of notable leadership acumen like His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the former governor of Ogun State, among many others,” he opined.
