ADC seeks postponement of FCT Area Council elections over ramadan
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, citing the Ramadan fasting period.
In a letter dated January 22, 2026, and addressed to INEC, the party said the proposed election date falls within Ramadan, a period of deep religious significance for Muslims, who constitute a substantial portion of the electorate in the FCT.
The letter was jointly signed by the ADC National Chairman, Senator David A. B. Mark, and the National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
According to the party, holding the elections during Ramadan could negatively affect voter turnout and participation. It stressed that, in the interest of fairness and inclusivity, the election date should be reconsidered to allow all eligible voters to participate actively in the democratic process.
“Given the profound cultural and religious significance of this period, and in the interest of robust and active participation in the democratic process by all eligible voters, it has become necessary to request a reconsideration of the election date,” the party stated.
The ADC urged INEC to shift the polls to a date after the Ramadan fast, noting that the request was made in pursuit of an inclusive electoral process that would not disadvantage any segment of the electorate on religious grounds.
The party also emphasized that its engagement with the electoral body was strictly institutional and in line with due process. It requested guidance from INEC on the appropriate procedural requirements for submitting a formal application in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the Commission’s guidelines.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic consolidation in Nigeria, the ADC said electoral credibility is strengthened when election management bodies demonstrate sensitivity to the social and religious realities of the people.
The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
