64-year old man in court for alleged car theft
A 64-year-old trader, Innocent Emenike, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a car valued at N1.8 million.
Emenike, a resident of Ajao Estate, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecutor, Insp Funmi Akinleye, alleged that the defendant conspired and stole N1.8 million, proceeds from the sale of a Toyota Corolla Car, property of one Casmir Udeh.
Akinleye told the court that the defendant committed the offences with others still at large on Jan. 15, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. in Ajao Estate, Lagos.
She submitted that the defendant, who claimed to be an auto dealer, sold the said car and failed to give the money to the complainant.
“Efforts made to retrieve the money from the complainant proved abortive,” the prosecutor said.
Akinleye said the alleged offences contravened sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, T.A. Oladele, granted the defendant N250,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Oladele ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and have evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case until Feb. 15, for mention.
