2027: INEC Announces Dates for Presidential, Governorship Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed March 6, 2027, for the conduct of Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across the country.

The commission also announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place earlier, on February 20, 2027.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the election timetable during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, February 13, 2026.

A day earlier, Amupitan had informed the National Assembly that the commission would need N873.78 billion to successfully conduct the 2027 general elections. He also revealed that an additional N171 billion has been proposed to support the commission’s routine operations in the 2026 fiscal year.

Speaking while defending the commission’s budget proposal before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters in Abuja, the INEC chairman explained that the funds would cover both election-related preparations and regular responsibilities such as by-elections and off-cycle polls.

The proposed N873.78 billion represents a significant increase compared to the N313.4 billion allocated for the 2023 general elections.

INEC further provided a breakdown of the 2027 election budget, stating that N379.75 billion is earmarked for operational expenses, N92.32 billion for administrative costs, N209.21 billion for technology, N154.91 billion for capital expenditure, and N42.61 billion for other miscellaneous expenses.
