2023: Why I turned my back against Obi – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed the reasons behind his decision not to back Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 general elections.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Wike dismissed Obi’s candidacy as lacking tangible political traction, branding him a “social media candidate” with no realistic path to victory.

“I knew he had no chance of winning,” Wike stated. “I don’t associate with candidates whose support is mostly online. That’s not how politics works.”

The former Rivers State governor explained that his political choices are based on careful assessment of a candidate’s viability and not on digital popularity or sentiment.

“As a politician, I analyze the field and align with who stands the best chance. It’s not always about who’s the most qualified; many factors determine electoral outcomes in Nigeria,” Wike said.

He further commented on the turbulent nature of the 2023 election, citing challenges such as the controversial currency redesign and fuel shortages as significant hurdles. Despite these obstacles, he lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ability to navigate the situation and emerge victorious.

“Tinubu faced immense sabotage from within his own party’s government,” Wike remarked. “But he endured and triumphed. That’s a testament to his political strength and divine favour.”

The FCT Minister concluded by commending Tinubu’s resilience, emphasizing that successful politicians combine strategy with grace.

“You must recognize when someone has both God and political skill on their side. Tinubu is one of those people,” he added.
