2022-2023 Nigeria living standards survey: NBS adopts digital interviewing devices for accuracy
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is adopting Computer Assisted Personnel Interviewing (CAPI) Devices for the 2022-2023 Nigeria Living Standards Survey (NLSS) in data collection from respondents.
The Statistician General of the Federation, Prince Semiu Adeyemi Adeniran, made this disclosed this at the Training of enumerators for the survey in Ibadan, Oyo State.
NBS released the result of the first NLSS in 2020 during the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic which was conducted in the 2018/19.
This provided the first official estimates of poverty and welfare in Nigeria after almost a decade and the result received international acceptance
The Statistician General explained the rational for the adoption of CAPI saying, “The adoption of the CAPI device will improve data collection by making it faster, eliminate human errors such as unwanted entry, increase quality control, reduce cost of questionnaire printing, and boost the timely production of the results.”
According to Prince Adeniran, “In line with our commitment to continue to modernize and ensure data quality of the highest level possible, the survey will be administered electronically using the Computer Assisted Personnel Interviewing (CAPI) Devices. The adoption of the CAPI device will improve data collection by making it faster, eliminate human errors such as unwanted entry, increase quality control, reduce cost of questionnaire printing, and boost the timely production of the results.
“We will also be mounting several layers of monitoring checks to ensure data collection is conducted in line with laid down procedures.”
Prince Adeniran warned enumerators to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations. He said: “Let me state categorically that irrespective of how you got nominated for this exercise, anyone identified not to be adhering to the protocols of the work will be replaced, as we cannot afford to compromise on the quality of this survey, especially after the huge investment and resources that have gone into the preparations and planning for the exercise.
“I am however, confident that you all represent the best hands in the Bureau for this activity so you will do a good job. The Bureau, therefore, is counting on you all to deliver a very credible exercise for the benefit of all our users and the country at large.”
He appealed for the cooperation of the respondents and households across the country, selected for data collection, assuring them of the utmost confidentiality in handling the information provided during the exercise.
“As mandated by the law, all information collected can and will only be used for the purpose of computing poverty and welfare indicators to inform government and the public.
“We therefore appeal that you provide responses to all the questions asked, as they would be useful in providing government with the tools, they require to make important socio-economic decisions, which affect us all as Nigerians”, he said.
