17 Angola Football Fans Killed In Stampede
Seventeen football fans have been reportedly killed in a stampede at a football stadium in the northern Angolan city of Uige on Friday, February 10, 2017.
The tragic incident occurred in the duel between Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo in Angola’s domestic League football.
According to police official Orlando Bernardo who witnessed the ugly scene, he explained that hundreds were also injured when supporters stormed the gates after failing to gain entry.
“There was a blockage at the entrance to the January 4 stadium, and this obstruction caused multiple fatalities — 17 deaths, and there are 56 injured in the hospital,” Bernardo said.
Meanwhile, the game ended in a 0-1 defeat for the home side, Santa Rita de Cassia and Angola’s President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has ordered an investigation into the incident.
