15th WAUG Games: BIU On The Verge Of History, Rakes In 20 Medals
Benson Idahosa University (BIU) is on the verge of making history at the ongoing 15th West Africa University Games (WAUG) hosted by Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Team BIU has delivered a sensational performance, raking in an impressive 20 medals comprises of 13 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze across six sporting events.
This medals haul is positioning the Benin based university as one of the top contenders at this year’s games featuring many universities from Nigeria and other west Africa countries.

In a performance that has left the host, Obafemi Awolowo University, and other giants speechless, Team BIU has turned the games into their own private gold mine.

From table to court, from pool to track, from brain to brawn, BIU is everywhere as the medal harvest gradually rakes in from the table tennis event with four gold, two silver and one bronze. It was an all-BIU final as brothers and sisters fought for the gold medals.
Furthermore, BIU athletes emerged squash kings and queens of the court, winning four gold, and one bronze medal. Ayomide Yusuf crushed everyone to take men’s singles gold, then BIU humbled host OAU in both men’s and women’s doubles.
Also, tennis event were amazing with a total of two gold and one bronze while the golden mermaids recorded two gold as Kimiakigha Joy swam like a dolphin to win Women’s 100m freestyle in the swimming event.
Speed and steel star, Felix Gyang powered to silver in the grueling men’s 5000m just as scrabble brain box champion, Nwabuzor Joy proved BIU brains are gold too.
The university’s outstanding outing is a testament to the dedication, discipline and determination of the athletes and coaching crew, as well as the unwavering support of the university management.
With more events still to come, Team BIU is poised to surpass its previous records and etch its name in WAUG history.
