12th Nigeria Police Games: Zone One Wins 6 Gold, 5 Silver, Tops Medals Table In Golf Event,

The golf event at the 12th edition of Nigeria Police Games held at Ibori Golf and Country Club (IGCC), Asaba, Delta State ended on a brighter mood as the Zone One, Nigeria Police Force topped the medals chart with six gold, and five silver.

The Zone comprises of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gambo Mohammed proved its worth to force the six other zones as well as Force Headquarters, Abuja to jostle for remaining nine gold, ten silver and six bronze medals among themselves.

The Zone 2 comprises of Lagos and Ogun known for its sporting excellence placed second on the medal log with three gold, three silver and two bronze totalling eight medals, while Force Headquarters, Abuja, having recoded a bronze lesser to Zone 2 placed third with three gold, three silver, and one bronze medals, equalling seven medals.

Moreover, the fourth posiyion on tye medals table went to Zone 12, Bauchi/Borno/Yobe won one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal, just as Zone 11, Osun/Oyo/Ondo won one gold, and one silver to place fifth.

Zone 6, Rivers/Akwa Ibom/Cross River which featured only a golfer at the event, Jackson Offem, placed sixth with a gold medal won by him at the expense of others.

Furthermore, Zone 4, Plateau/Nasarawa/Benue won two silver and one bronze medal thus finished as seventh best while Zone 7, Kaduna/Niger/FCT won only one bronze medal to finish last.

In her address, Chairman, Nigeria Police Golf, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Margaret Ochalla commended the officers for displaying sportsmanship spirit throughout the two days event.

The elated chairman noted that with what she witnessed, the game of golf would attain higher heights among other games, while she congratulated all those who distinguished themselves as well as others too for playing according to the rules of the game.

DCP Ochalla said: “They all turnout in large number and it was very commendable. They also exhibited the sportsmanship spirit throughout the two days event. When other golfers see medals won by their colleagues, they will join us next time.

“I want to appreciate the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the opportunity given to our athletes to showcase their God given talents at this year edition.”

Similarly, ASP Mohammed attributed his team victory to dedication and determination on the part of his team mates. “Golf is a game of patience, and that was what we exhibited from beginning to the end, and it pays off.

“We are good ambassador to our AIG for given us all the necessary support to excel in the game of golf and other games too, just as everyone can attest to in lifting the trophy in golf event.”

It could be recalled that the biennial games being hosted by the Nigeria Police Force, Anambra State Command is featuring all other sporting events, but due to unavailability of golf course in the state led to the shifting of the game to Asaba.

A total of twenty eight golfers comprising of ten ladies and eighteen men golfers representing various eight zones participated at the 18 holes stroke play and stableford event that lasted two days in Asaba.
