11 terrorists surrender as troops kill eight in Borno

Nigerian troops from Operation Hadin Kai have continued offensive actions against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents in the northeast.

According to a military statement, eleven terrorists laid down their arms and surrendered to security forces, handing over AK-47 rifles and ammunition during operations around the Azir–Wajiroko axis on 10 January 2026. At least eight other terrorist fighters were killed, and two suspected logistics suppliers were arrested in Gubio Local Government Area during related engagements.

The operations targeted multiple terrorist enclaves including Dagumba, Bonne, Yaganari, Gosuri and Umchile, where patrols dismantled hideouts, destroyed support structures and disrupted insurgent logistics networks.

Military Response & Wider Security Situation
The Nigerian military has publicly pledged to protect civilians and farmers from insurgent attacks, reporting similar successes in neutralising terrorists and freeing captives across Borno and other states.

Government officials recently highlighted that hundreds of terrorists have been neutralised in the region since March 2025, signifying sustained pressure on insurgent forces.

Coordinated nationwide operations have also resulted in arrests and the recovery of weapons and ammunition, part of broader counter-terrorism efforts.

Despite military gains, the conflict in Borno remains volatile. Just days earlier, a separate ambush resulted in at least nine Nigerian soldiers killed and several wounded underscoring ongoing risks for troops and civilians in the northeast.

These developments reflect a mixed security picture while recent operations have forced some insurgents to surrender and degraded terror infrastructure, militant attacks and troop casualties continue to challenge stability in Borno State.
