₦23m Terrorist Ransom Seized as Troops Rescue Victims in Zamfara, Sokoto

Troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) have intensified their onslaught against terrorists and bandits in Zamfara and Sokoto States, recording significant breakthroughs that include the interception of ransom funds, rescue of kidnap victims, recovery of stolen livestock, and elimination of armed fighters.

Between 8 and 10 September, the military conducted coordinated raids across Shinkafi, Gusau, Bukkuyum, and Tureta LGAs, disrupting criminal logistics and dismantling hideouts.

Captain David Adewusi, OPFY’s Media Information Officer, disclosed that in Shinkafi, soldiers intercepted over ₦23 million traced to ransom payments for abducted locals near the Nigeria–Niger border. Three suspects were caught with ₦8.7 million, while another group of two, driving a Toyota Corolla, was found with ₦15 million. Authorities have since taken custody of the suspects and funds for further investigation.

Elsewhere in Anka and Tureta LGAs, troops laid ambushes against rustlers moving stolen livestock into forest enclaves. The operations led to the rescue of eight kidnap victims and the recovery of 164 sheep, which were handed back to community leaders.

In Gusau LGA, a clash erupted along Lilo–Kofi Road, where soldiers engaged terrorists in heavy gunfire, killing six fighters. However, the army suffered casualties, losing three personnel, while two critically injured soldiers later died.

Captain Adewusi stressed OPFY’s resolve to maintain relentless pressure on criminal elements until stability returns to the Northwest and parts of the North Central. He also appealed to residents to provide credible intelligence to aid ongoing security operations.
